Studio Drinkwater is the practice of Charlie Drinkwater, a multidisciplinary artist and designer known for his raw, instinctive approach and distinctive visual language.
We were engaged to develop an identity and website that could reflect the breadth of his work while capturing the immediacy and personality of his process. Rather than imposing structure, the aim was to create a framework that allows for exploration, experimentation, and a more personal way of navigating the work. At the centre of the identity is a flexible initials marque, supported by a design language that balances a utilitarian foundation with a deliberately imperfect edge.
The system is open and adaptable, designed to accommodate a wide range of outputs while maintaining a clear and recognisable signature. Built to mirror the way Charlie works, the identity embraces variation and iteration, with just enough structure to hold it together. Typography, layout, and graphic elements shift depending on context, creating a system that feels responsive and alive.

This thinking carries through into the website, which was designed as an open, exploratory experience rather than a conventional portfolio. The platform allows users to move fluidly between projects, process, and behind-the-scenes content, offering a more complete view into the practice.
While the experience feels loose and intuitive, it is underpinned by a considered set of rules that bring clarity and rhythm to the navigation. Layouts create moments of order within a deliberately unpolished framework, ensuring the work remains the focus without feeling constrained.
The result is a digital space that acts less as a showcase and more as an extension of the studio itself, capturing both the output and the thinking behind it.
